Musculoskeletal outpatient physiotherapy

We offer outpatient musculoskeletal physiotherapy services across Rotherham.

Our services are designed to help ensure that people with musculoskeletal problems such as back pain, neck pain and other joint pains receive the right treatment, in the right place, at the right time.

Our therapists complete thorough assessments to determine the cause of your problem, and can offer specific advice about how to manage your symptoms and achieve your treatment goals.

This may include individual or group exercises to improve your strength and activity levels, advice about lifestyle changes and education on pain management strategies. We also offer manual therapy techniques to improve joint mobility and flexibility to address your problem.

Our therapists can also refer onwards to other appropriate services where needed.

Our team will work with you to decide on a treatment plan that addresses the things that matter most to you.

Preparing for your appointment

Your first appointment is a chance for you to tell your healthcare professional about your problem and how it affects you.

They may ask you a lot of personal questions about your health and your problem.

They then may complete a physical examination. This may involve looking at how you move.

To get the most out of this assessment, please come in appropriate clothing.

We have students working in our clinical areas learning how to care for you. Students will always introduce themselves to you and ask for your permission to provide your care.

If you would like a chaperone for your assessment, you can request one or attend with a family member or friend.

Patient initiated follow up (PIFU)

What is ‘Patient Initiated Follow Up’?

This means that you or your carer can book an appointment to see us when you need one during an agreed time period, which will be included in a letter. After this time, you will be discharged from our care, back to your GP. This might be if you are worried about your condition or symptoms, or if you feel that you are not recovering well.

Booking a follow up appointment

Telephone the Contact Centre on 01709 423200 and say you are on a ‘Patient Initiated Follow Up’ pathway.

The Contact Centre is open 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.

The appointment will be via telephone or face to face.

When not to use PIFU

If your concern is related to a different condition.
If it has been over agreed time period since your last appointment, you will need to go back to your GP.
If you require urgent medical advice, you should contact your GP or NHS 111.
