You have been given a helmet by your Orthotist.
What are helmets used for?
Helmets prevent damage to parts of your head and brain. They are often used after craniotomy surgery, where part of your skull has been removed.
How do I put on my helmet?
You should ideally put the helmet on while you are sitting down, as shown to you by your Orthotist.
Ensure the helmet is the correct way round, usually the longer part or the label is at the back. Put the helmet on as straight as you can, covering your forehead.
Once the helmet is in the correct position, fasten the chin strap firmly to stop it moving.
When should I wear my helmet?
Helmets should be worn all of the time when you are out of bed to reduce the risk of damage to your head and brain. This is especially important when you are moving around.
How do I look after my helmet?
You will need to look after your helmet, the hard plastic can be wiped with a cloth and the internal foam sponged down if required.
