Using a spinal brace

Using a spinal brace

Orthotics

You have been prescribed a spinal brace. It has been made just for you by your Orthotist.

Spinal braces are used to:

  • limit movement of the joints, ligaments and muscles in your back
  • assist weak muscles
  • support vertebrae (back bones in your spine) that have structural weakness or fractures

How do I put on my spinal brace?

  • Your brace should be put on lying down as shown to you by your Orthotist.
  • Try to ensure it is central and if it has steels at the back, make sure that these are on either side of your spine (back bone).
  • Fasten the bottom strap first and work upward. This will give you the best chance of keeping the brace in the right position. Keep putting it back in the right place as you go if it moves.
  • The straps should be pulled snug to ensure the support doesn’t move around.

It is usual to have some mild red marking to the skin as you begin wearing your brace. This can be difficult to see on black or brown skin. In some cases it may be helpful to wear a thin fitted cotton t-shirt to provide a barrier to your skin, to protect against rubbing.

If marking or soreness stays over 40 minutes after taking your brace off, or you notice that your symptoms are getting worse, please contact the Orthotic department for a review.

How long do I need to wear the brace for?

Your brace should be worn whilst sitting upright, standing, to transfer and for walking unless you have been advised otherwise by a healthcare professional.

You do not need to wear your brace when lying down.

How long you have to wear the brace for depends on the level and severity of your fracture or instability. Your consultant will advise you on this.

If you would like more details about this please contact the healthcare professional that referred you to have the spinal brace.

Who do I contact if I have a problem?
