Using a neck brace

Using a neck brace

Orthotics

You have been prescribed a neck brace. It has been made just for you by your Orthotist.

Neck braces are used to:

  • support the head and limit motion of the joints
  • support weak muscles
  • support vertebrae which have structural weakness or instability
  • provide pain relief

How do I put on my neck brace?

  • You should put your brace on before standing up
  • Keep your neck brace next to your bed and put it on whilst still lying down
  • Try to get your neck brace positioned centrally before fastening the straps
  • The straps should be pulled snug to ensure it doesn’t move around
  • Once fitted, you can stand up and use a mirror to check the fit
  • It can be easier to have help with putting your neck brace on and taking it off, if you have someone who can help you with this.

If you have a two piece neck brace it is usually easier to leave one of the Velcro straps fastened and just undo one side, allowing the other to act as a hinge.

It is not unusual for the skin on your shoulders, jaw and chest bones to become a little sore or red when your first start using it. This may be more difficult to see on black or brown skin.

If marking stays 40 minutes after taking your brace off, or you notice any of your symptoms getting worse, please contact the Orthotic department for a review.

When should I wear my neck brace?

Your Orthotist and referrer will advise you when to wear your neck brace, as this depends on the reason for having it. In most cases you will be advised to wear it all the time until your neck has healed, apart from in bed.

How do I look after my neck brace?

Plastic sections can be wiped with a damp cloth. The foam lining can be removed and hand washed as per manufacturer guidelines then allowed to air-dry.

If you are a long term neck brace user and require spare linings please contact the Orthotic department.

Who do I contact if I have a problem?

If you need any help, please contact the Orthotic Department on 01709 424385.
