Aspen neck brace

Orthotics

You have been recommended to use an Aspen® neck brace.

Aspen® neck braces are used to:

  • support bones in the spine which have weakness or instability
  • support the head and limit movement of the joints
  • provide pain relief
  • support weak muscles

They should only be removed when lying totally horizontal in a bed unless told otherwise by a doctor.

Putting on your Aspen® neck brace

  • You should put your brace on before standing up.
  • Ensure you keep your brace next to your bed and put it on whilst lying down.
  • Try to ensure it is central before fastening the straps.
  • The straps should be pulled snug to ensure the device does not move around.
  • Once fitted you can stand up and use a mirror to check the fit
  • If necessary seek help with putting your neck brace on and taking it off

It is usually easier to leave one of the Velcro straps fastened and just undo one side, allowing the other to act as a hinge.

What problems should I be aware of?

It is not unusual for the skin on your shoulders, jaw and chest bones to become a little sore or reddened during use.

If marking persists 40 minutes after taking your brace off, or you notice any worsening symptoms please contact the team for a review.

When should I wear my Aspen® neck brace?

Your Orthotist or Consultant will advise you when to wear your brace.

Usually braces need to be worn full time initially but sometimes can be removed in bed when lying flat.

Looking after your Aspen® neck brace

You will need to look after your brace.

Plastic sections can be cleaned with a damp cloth and foam linings can be hand washed in warm water.

Please do not try to adapt or fix the brace yourself. It has been prescribed for you they should not be used by anyone else.
