Getting ready for surgery

Pre-assessment

Thank you for returning your electronic pre-operative triage questionnaire. The answers you provided will help us to better understand your health so that we can help you to prepare for your surgery.

You will still need to come for a face-to-face assessment before your surgery to allow us to run some tests. These tests will depend on the operation and the kind of anaesthetic you are having.

They may include taking a blood sample, swabs and an ECG (tracing of your heart rhythm). This appointment will take place closer to your date for surgery.

In the meantime, it is important that you prepare yourself for surgery. What you do now can have a big impact on your recovery. Fitter patients recover more quickly and are less at risk of developing complications. They are also less likely to have delays due to not being well enough for surgery.

The Royal College of Anaesthetists has general advice on what you can do to prepare for surgery.
