You have been given a helmet (soft skull protector) by your Orthotist.
What are helmets used for?
Soft skull protector helmets prevent damage to parts of your head from medical conditions such as seizures or from behaviours such as head banging.
How do I put on my helmet?
You should ideally put your helmet on while sitting down, as shown to you by your Orthotist.
Ensure the label is at the back of the helmet to get it the right way round, and put it on as straight as you can, covering your forehead.
You must always fasten the chin strap firmly to reduce movement of the helmet.
When should I wear my helmet?
Helmets are designed to reduce the risk of damage so should be worn in situations when behaviours are more likely to occur, or seizures are more likely to cause damage.
This could be in stressful environments or during certain activities such as playtime.
Helmets should not be worn in bed and you should limit how much you wear the helmet around your house or in an environment you are familiar in.
How do I look after my helmet?
You will need to look after your helmet, it can be hand washed in warm water or wiped with a cloth.
Dry the helmet flat, do not dry in a tumble dryer
Who do I contact if I have a problem?
If you are concerned about the condition, size or fit of your helmet, or if you need any help, please contact the Orthotic Department on 01709 424385.
